Sustainability Report 2023 Preserve what works & embrace the new

Future with Tradition

Sustainable thinking and action are a matter of course for us at EGO and are an integral part of our daily work. For generations, we have closely monitored the impact of our business activities on the environment. Our constant goal is to develop innovative technologies without compromising the environment.

As a pioneer in the development of low-hazard sealing and adhesive products based on natural raw materials, we are aware of the new challenges that our growth brings. Therefore, at EGO, we established a comprehensive sustainability strategy long before the introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This EGO Sustainability Strategy was outlined in EGO's first Sustainability Report 2023. The report describes the company's values, strategy, and objectives regarding sustainability and includes forward-looking statements based on current assumptions and forecasts.

Today, EGO is a well-known brand valued for its high-quality, safe, and durable adhesive and sealing solutions, particularly in the field of sustainable construction. Our efforts have been recognized through numerous awards for our sustainability achievements.

Take responsibility

Sustainability | more than just a buzzword

EGO's history shows that companies can take responsibility for the environment. Innovation, investment and commitment can achieve positive effects on both the environment and society. Sustainability is not an obstacle to business success, but rather can create a competitive advantage.

Kaltenbrunn Mountain Chalk

Our chalk quarry in the Kaltenbrunn district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen plays an important role as a natural source of raw materials in numerous products since the beginning of the company. Starting with the original EGO LEINÖLKITT, which was one of the first products launched in 1947, mountain chalk also contributes to the formula of modern sealants. We started covering part of our energy requirements for our production with our own hydroelectric power plant decades ago.

The Sustainable Replacement Cartridge Since 1984

Since 1984, we have been offering EGOPACK, a reusable packaging solution. This practical and clean cartridge sleeve makes disposable cartridges, which pose waste disposal issues, unnecessary. Furthermore, we introduced the dark recycled cartridge, made with 80% recycled content. Our goal is to transition fully to this type of packaging as quickly as possible, making a valuable contribution to the reuse of plastics. But at EGO, we don't just handle waste carefully. Environmental concerns are diligently considered across all operational areas. A responsible approach to energy and resources places high demands – even on technical expertise.

Environmental Protection

In order to further advance environmental protection and conservation, ISO 14001:2015 certification was achieved in 2018, and the publication of a sustainability report is planned for 2024. Driven by personal commitment and the requirements of the standard, continuous efforts are made to optimize environmental and sustainability processes and to implement them to the best of our ability. To meet the highest standards in sustainability and data transparency, EGO provides Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) as well as Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for its sealant range, along with numerous product verifications for sustainable building assessment systems (DGNB Navigator Label, LEED, BREEAM, BNB, QNG).

Supplier Network

The largest digital network for sustainable supply chains not only ensures compliance with various legal requirements, but also actively drives forward sustainability initiatives from diverse perspectives. In doing so, it creates synergies that enable unified solutions across national borders, particularly within Europe.

Digitalization

In the area of digitalization, EGO is connected to bimobject in order to provide all necessary data for BIM projects. With the Green Deal, the European Commission aims to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050. By 2030, CO₂ emissions are already expected to be reduced by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels. The construction sector plays a particularly crucial role on the path to climate neutrality. It must become more efficient, resource-friendly, and therefore more sustainable. Construction chemicals are an essential key to achieving this goal.

Energy Efficiency

The energy efficiency of buildings, both in renovation and new construction—is significantly improved through the use of our products by creating airtight building envelopes and preventing moisture damage. Our EGO Butyl sealants, particularly in window connection areas, offer the highest water vapor Diffusion resistance (sd > 1500 m), thereby making a substantial contribution to energy savings. In addition, our most efficient products are Emission-controlled and meet the strict Emission requirements of EMICODE, AgBB, and the French VOC and CMR regulations, featuring low VOC values. They are also LEED®-compliant according to EQ c4.1.

In the future, EGO will continue to implement a variety of measures, as well as numerous economic, ecological, and social projects, to minimize the impact of our activities on people and the environment.

Sustainability Strategy

In today’s world, sustainability reports are often perceived as a marketing tool. However, for our company, responsibility towards the environment and people has always been at the heart of our business decisions.
As a medium-sized, family-owned company from the Bavarian Alpine foothills, the protection of our natural surroundings has been central to our actions for generations, as has the close and trusting relationship with our team.

From the very beginning, we have always taken measures and made decisions that consider both environmental protection and the well-being of people. These include the use of our own renewable energy sources, resource conservation and waste reduction, the preference for regional raw material suppliers, and the utilization of our natural raw material sources. Additionally, we continuously focus on substituting hazardous substances and reducing emissions.
Due to their high-quality chemical base and the use of carefully selected quality raw materials from Europe, our products are among the most consistent construction sealants on the market. With products of this quality, energy savings of up to 25% can be achieved in window sealing during building renovations.

What we aim to achieve with this report is an in-depth analysis of our activities and processes to identify areas for improvement. From this, we have formalized and structured our approaches to develop a comprehensive and global sustainability strategy.

Our Vision

For a good life: Sealing and bonding with quality and safety.

Our Mission

EGO manufactures sealing and bonding products for specific applications and provides transparent data for both the industry and sustainable construction. Quality is our top priority. We enable both professionals and DIY enthusiasts to access durable, high-quality products that are easy to handle. Our flexibility in variety and quantity is driven by the needs of our customers, offering solutions for both large and small challenges in sealing and bonding. Our goal is to continually improve the physiological safety of our products and to reduce hazardous substances and waste. We shape our future based on our tradition as a family-owned company.

Wesentliche Themen

The materiality analysis is essential for a comprehensive assessment of corporate performance as well as the short-, medium-, and long-term impacts on society and the environment. It involves identifying and evaluating the issues that are most significant for EGO’s sustainable development and for the interests of its stakeholders. EGO has adopted the double materiality approach required by the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which considers both the material impacts of the company and the financial materiality for the company itself.

The Four Pillars of Our Strategy

Our strategy behind the objectives

For the development of its strategy, EGO has consolidated the five areas of action into four core pillars in close coordination with its governance structures, and based on this foundation, defined its strategic approach and objectives.

Product

Our products form the core of our company. We are committed to developing high-quality, durable, and safe products that meet the needs of our customers while minimizing risks to people and the environment. By being used in the construction sector, our products contribute to climate protection—particularly through reduced energy consumption and the long-lasting performance and functionality of our adhesives and sealants. Additional measures include minimizing hazardous substances, using natural and low-Emission raw materials, ensuring data transparency regarding the sustainability aspects of our products, and promoting digitalization in construction.

Planet

Protecting our planet is a top priority for us. We are aware of the environmental impacts of our business activities and are committed to minimizing them. We aim to achieve this by assessing and progressively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, as well as by cutting waste and using our resources responsibly.

Partner

Collaboration with our partners is essential to the success of our company. We rely on long-term, trust-based relationships with our suppliers, customers, authorities, and other stakeholders. Together, we work toward responsible and sustainable sourcing as well as innovative solutions. In addition, we aim to make a positive contribution to society and the environment through our active participation in associations and industry bodies.

People

Our employees are our most valuable asset – they are the heart of our company. Their health, safety, and well-being are top priorities. We are committed to providing a positive and safe working environment with fair conditions, where every employee feels valued and respected. In addition, we support the well-being of the communities in which we operate and strive to make a positive impact on society.

Sustainability goals

Sustainability management encompasses a wide range of critical topics, including environmental and climate protection, social responsibility, and ethical business practices. Given the diversity and growing relevance of these issues, we have decided to set a series of goals for the year 2023.

These new goals are an essential part of our corporate strategy and are directly linked to our quality and environmental management systems (ISO 9001 and 14001). Their implementation and progress are regularly reviewed within the framework of our integrated management system.

We are fully committed to achieving these goals in order to make a positive contribution to society and the environment, while ensuring the long-term success of our company.

For a better overview, we have mapped our goals to the recognised sustainability goals of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda. This agenda comprises 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are divided into 169 sub-goals. The goals address the current challenges facing our society in the four areas of ‘Planet’, ‘People’, ‘Peace’ and ‘Prosperity’. Although these goals are primarily aimed at governments, companies are also clearly addressed, as they can and must have a significant impact on these challenges.

Questions and Answers on Sustainability at EGO Dichtstoffwerke

A sustainability report describes the environmental, social and economic impact of a company and documents its measures and objectives for promoting sustainable development.

A sustainability report serves to provide transparency about a company's sustainable actions, demonstrate its responsibility towards the environment, society, and economy, and communicate progress towards sustainability goals.

Companies operating in the EU that meet specific size criteria, such as exceeding a certain balance sheet total, net turnover, or employing more than 250 employees, are required to create a sustainability report. This is particularly true for large public-interest entities, such as listed companies, banks, or insurance companies.
